Above is a Visual Journal of a glassblowing demonstration by one of the coolest, and creative persons I have ever met, Martin Demaine. Like most creative people Marty understands his materials – in this case glass – respects it, and desires to explore it. He says he may not know ‘what’ he’s doing, but he always knows the next step. This sentiment is shared by many creators and craftspeople. They know they are trying to solve a problem… they know where they are going or have an idea, but they may not be sure how they get there… They let anomalies happen and work with them. This freedom, this ‘dance’ happens when one is familiar, and knows his/ her tools and materials. It’s the same when I sketch… I know what I want to “say”, what I want to capture, but how that happens I am unsure… and should something unexpected happen along the way… I work with it.
Keep up the great work Marty and I look forward to seeing more great things from you!
