Boat off Las Cuevas Beach

6” x 8.5” Pen, ink,  and colored pencils in Ryman sketchbook

I did this sketch on Carnival Sunday at the beach. It was a lovely day; the water, the sun, the boats, the verdant hills… beautiful! Not to mention a day filled with laughs. Have a great Saturday!

Trinidad & Tobago Carnival 2011

10” x 8.25” ink pen, and markers in Moleskine sketchbook

This is the FIRST sketch that I have done in one of my Moleskine sketchbooks!!! Dedicated to Carnival, my cousin who bought me the books…and to the Moleskine community of artists. The sketch tries to capture the memorable costumes, colors, and patterns of the Carnival Parade of the
Bands yesterday. It was wonderful! My feet are a bit tired (chipping, and dancing to music for an entire day can cause that…;-). Congratulations again to all the winners, masqueraders, and the beautiful country of Trinidad & Tobago for the Greatest show on earth.

Trinidad & Tobago Carnival
is described as “An explosion of colour, music, revelry, and creativity, Trinidad’s Carnival has spawned similar celebrations around the world; but nothing on earth can rival the abandon, euphoria and stunning spectacle of our festival. With its massive masquerade bands, spectacular costumes, pulsating music and unparalleled stamina for partying, Trinidad’s Carnival is often described as the greatest show on earth. It is a time for release and everyone is invited to join the party.” (gotrinidadandtobago.com)

Above are some sketches I was able to quickly do of the Kings and Queens of Carnival competition on Sunday night. Made it home just in time after my beach-lime. The King of Carnival was Pacific Tsunami by Wade Madray, and the Queen was D Jewelled Chandileer by Peola Marchand. Below are some other Kings and Queens that I really liked! The sketches are a bit hurried as the wonderful creations were on the stage for probably one minute.

I have more sketches but I haven’t colored them as yet… I will post them eventually.

I would like to  congratulate Karene Asche on winning the Calypso Monarch Competition. She has always been a queen of calypso on the stage carrying the flag of calypso high. Keep it up and again, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Congrats also goes to Trinidad All Stars for their winning Panorama performance (See youtube video below).

I will be on the streets today taking in all the action (Carnival Tuesday), and having some corn soup… So stay tuned! I will try to juggle photography and sketching (YIKES!!!).

[Update: This has been my 100th post. Thanks for the support guys!]
