Happy Friday!!!

Hi guys!

I haven’t disappeared, believe me! The Spring semester is over and now it’s the Summer. I will be working on my research but also making time for some fun. And no matter what, I need my creative outlets. Here’s my Visual Journal for Sunday 31st May 2015.

Have a great day and see you all again soon!

TI

I am trying to start back doing my sketches, cartoons, etc. as best as I can. I did this painting in Spring of last year on the topic of favelas in Brazil, but never used it. I thought I would post it for you today.

One a Day (OAD)!

I took the photo during one of my classes. I LOVE pens and am very particular about them. I can’t remember that this pen was special in any way, but, it was shiny and the composition of it laying on the paper looked beautiful through my camera lens.

Wii

On Friday & Saturday we are expecting a blizzard. An email was sent out by MIT that night notifying us that school would be closed tomorrow (Friday). Of course I was happy! This led to a great night of hanging out with friends, playing Wii, impromptu karoake, and plans for the impending snow. From Michael Jackson, to bowling, to cricket, to boxing, what a great night! I chose this photo because it reminds me of surprise days-off!

Have a great week!

One a Day (OAD)!

Ok… so from today I try to stick to my plan to document my day, and stick to choosing ONE photo. Just one. This will be challenging. What do I do if nothing exciting happens during my day? What if I have too many exciting things? let’s see how I deal with this. Maybe this constraint will lead to a creative solution or experiment..

This semester I am TA-ing (Teaching Assistant) for Gediminas Urbonas in his Introduction to Visual Arts in ACT (Art, Culture & Technology) class. My role is to handle the logistics of the class, allowing teh faculty member and students to focus on the content of the course. It includes preparing discussions and Psets (assignments) at times, marketing and publicizing lectures, arranging training of students, and so much more. ACT is a pretty cool Department… the admin staff rocks! So, today was my first day TA-ing this class. I had to come early to prepare the class, which is held in the CUBE this semester. Today Debbie Douglas, a curator at the MIT Museum and Patricia Reed, artist/ philosopher.

THESIS!!!!

Looking for designers to interview…

So.. I have been working on fleshing out my thesis proposal this semester… It’s quite an exercise which makes you think in squares, circles, and triangles. From choosing your thesis advisor and readers, to deciding on your topic, what you want to focus on now, for the next few years, what you want to do after your studies, what you want to do for the rest of your life, if you want to go into academia, the industry, whether you want to save the world, and if you have the time to do want you want… and the truth is, there will never be enough time.. I have to keep reminding myself that I should focus on “the” specific problem I am trying to solve and be clear on my contribution. I cannot save the world with one thesis…

My thesis proposal is due less than 4 weeks. My particular interest is in Design & Computation as it relates to culture and wearables/ architecture of the body –  I am working on the exact term that succinctly describes my proposed work.. There is much for me to flesh out, it is a work in progress. The context in which I would like to apply my research is in the design and production of “wearables” such as costumes and dancing mobiles. My specific context will be that of Carnival, Trinidad Carnival to be exact. This will be my specific context or case study.

Are there any designers in the costume/ fashion/ wearable industry who would like to be interviewed? I have a keen interest in the intersection between design, computation, and fabrication as it relates to Carnival. If you would like to be interviewed, or know of a designer – that person can be a fashion designer, a designer of wearables as artistic, social, or cultural objects, or designers in the Carnival industry – please contact me. I would love to interview you.

Wire-benders, costume designers and makers, those in the computational and wearable industry, etc… Contact me.

Have a GREAT week all!!!

Hi All

It has been quite a while since I’ve posted. I am not back in Cambridge and Singapore is still on my mind.. the food.. Oh boy do I miss the food. I have been really busy and therefore unable to post the remainder of my Singaploration. This semester I am doing research, and my most challenging class thus far is Introduction to Computers and Engineering Problem Solving where I am learning programming in JAVA. It monopolizes all my time as I my brain (right brain) tries to understand and figure this whole thing out…

I am not sure what path my blog will take this semester… maybe I use it to work through my Java or share some other stuff with you.. In the meanwhile I will post my “mash-ups” for you…
