The Main Library and many other buildings on the Campus are of a Brutalist Architecture.

Student Activity Center (SAC) Building - University of the West Indies

Above is a sketch of the SAC Building at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad. It’s usually a regular “liming” spot, but even more so now with it being exam time and all. UWI’s Campus has buildings of many different periods. This one is pretty modern. I like the roof…it’s very tropical, and the use of louvres, open space, etc. Cross winds and ventilation makes it comfortable in our humid climate. The interior needs some work however…one thing that irritates me about the space is its lack of electrical outlets. There are tens and hundreds of students there and the number of outlets to accommodate them is FAR too few.

Hope you have a great day today, and remember:

Great people talk about ideas, Average people talk about things, and Small people talk about other people.

Milner Hall, University of the West Indies, thinking insomniac, vernelle noel

Milner Hall - University of the West Indies

Above is a sketch of Milner Hall at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad. From outside the architecture reads a tropical one with its sloping roof, generous overhangs, ventilation blocks, and shaded porches (galleries).

Brief History:
Milner Hall is the oldest of the Halls of Residence at the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies. It has been in existence for over 75 years and has been the home of many regional and international students. It has contributed immensely to their academic and social development. Milner Hall was part of the original Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture that was acquired by the University of the West Indies in 1960. It was subsequently enlarged and can now accommodate 168 students.

UWI Lands & Survey Building, St. Augustine, Trinidad, vernelle noel, thinking insomniac

UWI Department of Geomatics Engineering and Land Management, Trinidad

Above is a sketch of the building housing the Department of Geomatics Engineering and Land Management at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad. It was previously called the Department of Surveying & Land Information. The  architecture is also Brutalist with the raw surfaces of the materials of construction, rather than any applied finish being highlighted. The main structure is steel which is painted and exposed, with a metal roof finish. The exterior walls are concrete blocks; no mortar render, and small joints that appear to be V-shaped or raked.

University of the West Indies - Learning Resource Center (St. Augustine)

Above is a sketch I did of the Learning Resource Center at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad. The Campus has a distinctive and rich landscape of lawns  with magnificent groups of mature indigenous trees and shrubs. They are majestic and beautiful, and provides ample shade from the hot Caribbean sun while beckoning the cool Caribbean breeze.

Have a productive and happy Thursday everyone!

University of the West Indies, Trinidad

This is a sketch I did of the courtyard in front of the Main Library at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad. I also have it on the Thinking Insomniac Architecture & Urban Sketches Calendar.

The Main Library and many other buildings on the Campus are of a Brutalist Architecture. Brutalist Architecture highlights the raw surfaces of the actual materials of construction, rather than any applied finish. Its trademark is that of uncovered, grey concrete as in the Main Library Building.  Architecture is created out of a series of statements on  materials, their articulation, their connections, and how they stand up. Buildings can be covered up – hiding how it is put together, or revealed – showing how it is put together. Brutalist architecture underlines the identifiable origins of materials, accentuates undisguised edges, and highlights the natural state.

Daaga Hall, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, UWI, thinking insomniac, vernelle noel

Daaga Hall - UWI, Trinidad

6” x 8.5” Pen and ink, coloured pencils and markers in Ryman sketchbook

This is a sketch of Daaga Hall in UWI, Trinidad & Tobago. It is a very contemporary looking building with a captivating facade. The broad, gentle staircase serves as circulation and comfortable sitting. The deep overhang provides shade to relax. Below is a little history of Daaga Hall.

“On its site, in 1927, the ICTA Dining Hall was opened, a two-storey building with dining facilities and kitchens downstairs, club and recreation rooms upstairs. When St Augustine became a UWI campus, this structure became the Guild Hall, the centre of student activities. In the period of student activism of 1969-70, it was renamed Daaga Hall after an African ex-slave soldier who led a mutiny at St Joseph in 1837. The building was destroyed by fire in 1980, and the present Auditorium stands on the same site.” Bridget Brereton, Professor of History taken from http://gerardbest.wordpress.com.

UWI Admin Building - St. Augustine, Trinidad

This is a sketch I did of the Admin. Building at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad. There is no body of water in front of the building creating a reflection as indicated above. The reflection shown is actually the back of the page on which I drew the sketch. I scanned it, and composed them to appear as a reflection.
