Monsoon Palace - Udaipur, India

I did this sketch of the Monsoon Palace in Udaipur, India in August 2008. This is the front view of the Palace from the park;. After touring it, taking photos, etc. I sat and sketched. I was told that I needed to go there for the beautiful sunset, and Oh yes! it was definitely beautiful. The drive is quite a scenic one, with views and green vegetation that’s so rich and different from the chaotic city of Udaipur below; further cementing India as a country of contrasts and dichotomies.

The Monsoon Palace is a hilltop palatial residence in the city of Udaipur, Rajasthan in India, overlooking Lake Pichola. It was used as a major location for the filming of the 1983 James Bond film, Octopussy. It appears as the residence of the principal villain, an exiled Afghan prince named Kamal Khan (Louis Jourdan),and sequences shot include the finale, complete with a battle in the courtyard and a Union Jack hot-air balloon, a night-time visit by a Soviet military helicopter and a full ‘tiger’ hunt on elephants as 007 (Roger Moore) escapes from the Palace and is pursued into the jungle. Note #5 on Architecture & Planning:

The Value of the Architect:

An efficient building operation is possible only with carefully prepared drawings, specifications, and contracts; and competent and unbiased general adminstration of the construction. An architect also advises regarding the selection of contractors, prepares their contracts, and guards his client against losses resulting from lien laws and other causes (American Institute of Architects).

Additional Skills Successful Planners Possess?

  1. Mastery of techniques for involving a wide range of people in making decisions.
  2. Understanding of local, state, and federal government programs and processes.
  3. Understanding of the social and environmental impact of planning decisions on communities.
  4. Ability to work with the public and articulate planning issues to a wide variety of audiences (American Planning Association).
